The best skin care products for women over 50 are recommended by celebrities. Laura Dern recommends the Pure Radiance Oil by True Botanicals, while Jennifer Aniston swears by the night cream she uses on the show. In our 50s, our skin tends to be drier and less oily, so moisturizing and anti-aging ingredients are essential. Hurley claims to use Estee Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair twice a day. Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream is a favorite of Catherine Zeta-Jones.
Enzyme Exfoliant mask by Tracie Martyn is Padma Lakshmi’s favorite. Sunday is Jennifer Aniston’s self-care day, she says. L’Oréal’s Rosy Tones Moisturizer is a firm favorite of Helen Mirren. Dr. Barbara Sturm’s Darker Skin Tones Cleanser is what Angela Bassett prefers to use. This is her tenth year as the face of the company’s products.
Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream and Weleda Skin Food Original Ultra-Rich Cream. L’Oréal Revitalift Derm Intensives Hyaluronic Acid Serum comes highly recommended by Nicole Kidman. Nivea Essentially Enriched Body Lotion is a favorite of Viola Davis. That Big Screen Moisturizer is Oprah’s favorite moisturizer “hands down,” she says.

“When I feel a dullness or a breakdown of my skin, I like to apply a moisturizing oil first. I use either True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil or Elizabeth Arden’s Eight Hour Cream. I also like to use a night cream—it’s important to have the right one for your skin type. I usually go for Estée Lauder’s Advanced Night Repair.” —Laura Dern, 49, actress, film producer
“My nighttime ritual is similar to the day one. I use the True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil on my face and the Elizabeth Arden Eight Hour Cream on my body. I’ll finish with a hydrating mask.” —Catherine Zeta-Jones, 48, actress, TV host
“I’m a big fan of cleansing, exfoliating, and moisturizing as the first step.

She has oily skin that gets red around her eyes.
I use L’Oréal True Botanicals Pure Radiance Oil from the earth to purify my skin. If I’m going to wear makeup I usually stick with a BB or CC cream, which is emollient and moisturizing, or I layer a foundation or primer, which are both light and sweatproof. I also like using Neutrogena Rapid Wrinkle Repair Regenerating Cream, which I applied both during my Skin Quest face-off and before I got on the airplane. I don’t like to get that shimmery because it tends to age me a bit. I like Nivea Essentially Enriched Body Lotion, but I don’t use a lot of lotion on my face. I’ve found that the last thing I need is extra moisture on my face. That can make my skin look droopy.
Helen Mirren’s beauty secrets
Certain ingredients do wonders for older skin—and can be found in many of these products. “Under eye creams like Stiefel de Quat’s Anti-Age ($90, stiefel-de-quat.com) don’t require makeup, they won’t make your under-eye bags look worse, and they have a larger dermal absorbency,” explains Dr. David Lortscher, a New York City dermatologist. The same goes for ingredients like hyaluronic acid, which help fill in fine lines. “You have to look for ingredients that give antioxidants to skin—and this is the best treatment for fine lines and wrinkles,” Lortscher says. Other dermatologists agree. “A new generation of ingredients are more targeted and less harsh to the skin,” says New York City dermatologist Kevin D. Brown, author of How to Look 10 Years Younger in 10 Days.
Jennifer Aniston’s morning beauty routine
When Aniston is working, she gets up at 4:30 a.m. to get her day started on the right foot. In an interview with Well+Good, she revealed that she meditates for 10 to 20 minutes in the morning before eating her breakfast and working out. “Usually I’ll have a shake, with some form of pure protein, then bananas, blueberries, frozen cherries, stevia, a vegetable mix of dynamic greens, maca powder, and a little chocolate,” she says. She adds a tiny bit of cacao to the mix. “Just some bread and poached eggs with avocado if I’m not going to drink my shake. Also, you can make millet cereal with almond milk and bananas for the colder months.”
Health and fitness are a priority for Aniston. As a result, she is able to hold a plank for three minutes at a time. The elliptical is one of her favorite forms of exercise. You don’t merely wiggle around on the elliptical till you’ve worked up a sweat, do you? Not familiar.) In addition, she’s learnt that good health is all about moderation. Jennifer Aniston once said, “I moved from being a crazy fitness gal to sort of thinking, ‘My body wants a little bit of break,'” in an interview with Women’s Health. “Rather than obsessively working out and eating healthily, I choose to focus on simple activities like going for a stroll or taking the dog for a walk. I began to appreciate life a bit more.”
Elizabeth Hurley’s morning beauty routine
Ms. Hurley typically takes a shower, before applying moisturizer, sunscreen, foundation, mascara and lipstick. To prep her skin before she’s set to take the stage, she might use several different versions of Magic Eraser pads and then wipe off the magic. She adds:
“I exfoliate with another Marc Jacobs Magic Eraser ($25). I use either the Brightening Peel or the Scrubbing Sponge, then wipe them off with a cotton pad. It is the only scrub I trust. It dissolves all of the blackheads and the extract tightens my pores. I only use the Magic Eraser before the red carpet. I use it before my skin show, not during. It’s far too sticky for a red carpet.”
The best skin care for men over 50
Of course, men can take advantage of antiaging products, too.
Catherine Zeta-Jones’ nighttime beauty routine
One thing she’s adamant about: sunscreen. “I’m not ashamed to say that I wear sunscreen to bed every single night. I wear it at all times—even when it’s 100 degrees, I still put it on,” she says. The same rules apply for the rest of the day, she says, and she actually has a prescription for it. “When I’m working in a very heavy suit, I make sure I’m taking care of my skin by putting in a good moisturizer,” she says. “I’ll put in SPF when I need it and have that moisturizer with me all day.”
